I will be completing a service learning project for this graduation requirement. I will be working with the Schuylkill Medical Center Outpatient Surgery Center to create a Child Friendly Emergency Room Unit. My project will incorporate the following elements:
1. I will create a children’s book explaining surgery procedures for children and parents. This will require research of the medical field and surgery procedures as well as the creation of the book.
2. I will create artwork that can be used to decorate the walls. I will use my art skills to create these projects.
3. I will purchase/collect toys that can be used in the waiting room area and pre/post surgery areas. I will set up a collection to obtain some of these items and will purchase the rest.
I will be meeting again with a representative from the Schuylkill Medical Center on May 10, 2010. Together we will decide if these actions are appropriate and if there is anything else they would like me to accomplish through my project. I will discuss the details of this meeting in my next blog post.
